Seal for vans, semi-trailers, trailers, containers, refrigerators, truck – for doors, tailgates
A van seal is one of the elements of car fittings that must first and foremost ensure that the load compartment is airtight. In addition, a quality van seal:
- prevents fine sand and dust from entering the bodywork;
- removes unpleasant irritating squeaks from metal parts in contact;
- improves thermal insulation;
- increases the level of noise insulation;
- acts as a shock absorber;
- ensures quiet closing of doors and body gates,
- prevents door leaves from freezing in winter.
What kinds of seals are there?
On the domestic market there are various seals for vans, trailers, semi-trailers, containers, refrigerators and other trucks.
It is possible to distinguish their main varieties by material, shape and type of installation.
By material
EPDM (ethylene-propylene rubber). Synthetic rubber. This is an elastomeric substance. Sealing profile from it is installed on the doors and gates of gazelles, isothermal vans and boxes, trailers, vans, etc.
Advantages:
- Resistance to atmospheric influences, moisture.
- Not subject to rotting, mould formation.
- Well retains elasticity at low temperatures.
Disadvantages:
- Not suitable for contact with aggressive chemicals.
TPE (thermoplastic elastomer). Artificial rubber.
Advantages:
- Resistant to ozone, moisture.
- Resistant to UV radiation. Does not burn out, does not dry out.
- It does not lose flexibility and strength during temperature fluctuations from -60 to +100 °C.
- Resistant to aggressive reagents, including petrol.
Combined rubber-plastic. Produced on the basis of two components: PVC and EPDM.
Advantages:
- Durability: service life is 2-3 times longer than rubber or PVC seals.
- Remains elastic at low and high temperatures (-50 °C/+120 °C).
- Resistant to atmospheric effects, ozone, ultraviolet and chemicals.
- Mounting of the product does not require a fixing plate.
Other synthetic rubbers. In addition to the gates and rear doors of vans, semi-trailers and trailers, there are many varieties of automotive rubber for installation in other places of the lorry. These are seals based on silicone, nitrile, butadiene, etc. Up to 20 components in various combinations are used in their production. The porous structure gives flexibility, but is less durable. Stiffer rubbers have better durability, but lack of flexibility may not seal corners and bends. Each grade of rubber products is designed for a specific installation location (boot doors, movable and fixed windows, engine compartment, van and semi-trailer windows) and certain types of vehicles. There are also universal rubber seals.
By shape (profile)
H-shaped. They have different seat widths.
- Suitable for installation on various surfaces.
- Easy to install.
Multi-bladed, or multi-chambered. Have several petals (from 1 to 5). The width of the seat is from 20 to 100 mm.
- Designed for isothermal boxes and refrigerators.
- Multi-chamber construction provides increased sealing.
- Prevent moisture penetration from outside.
- Maintain the required temperature inside the chamber.
T-shaped. In addition to the main crossbar in the form of a T, have additional petals.
- Designed for installation between containers.
Z, E, D, P-shaped and complex cross-sections. They are installed on other parts of vans and trucks (windscreens, side windows, side doors, hatches, etc.). Each type corresponds to a different gap width.
By type of installation
- Surface-mounted with additional fixing plates and mounting with self-tapping screws.
- Surface-mounted without fixing plates.
- On an adhesive basis.
How to choose the right seal for van doors?
When there is a question of choosing a seal for doors and gates of a van, trailer, semi-trailer, container, refrigerator, you should take into account the following main points: type of car and operating conditions, type of material, size selection.
Step 1: First of all, you should look for a product depending on the type of your truck and operating conditions.
If it is a trailer for transporting non-food products on motorways – this is one variant of sealing element (material, profile, mounting).
If you are transporting products in a refrigerator or sea container – this is another product variant.
If you intend to deliver goods by van on unpaved roads – this is a third product variant.
Step 2: The next question to ask is: what requirements must the material from which the seal is made fulfil? Will it be:
- resistant to abrasion;
- have the necessary strength to loads;
- resistant to harsh weather and temperature conditions (frost, heat, rain);
- may or may not be resistant to chemicals;
- be more cold- or heat-resistant.
Step 3: When you have chosen a suitable product according to the above criteria, then you need to select a seal for vans, semi-trailers, trailers, containers, depending on the size of the gate or door and the size of the gaps that need to be sealed. It should be borne in mind that for door seals it is allowed to change linear dimensions up to ±5% per 1 metre of length, and when buying, measure the length taking this into account. Plus allowance should be made for bends, corners, etc.
